For Meciar's alleged anti-democratic tendencies Slovakia failed to secure an invitation to NATO in Madrid's summit where the alliance opened its doors to Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic.
1997 Slovakia was excluded from the first group of EU enlargement.
1998 Despite Meciar's HZDS victory in parliamentary elections, he was unable to form the government. Mikulas Dzurinda became the new prime minister of Slovakia.
